We start at Rossio, the nerve centre of the city, and at Praça dos Restauradores, where the obelisk recalls the independence regained in 1640. We move on to Largo do Carmo, where the Carnation Revolution ended almost five decades of dictatorship in 1974, and cross Chiado, the district of historic cafés, theatres and bookshops — with a pastel de nata along the way, of course.

The clever part is that you walk the interesting bits and the car meets you at the top. We did Rossio and Chiado on foot, then were driven to Alfama rather than climbing to it. Three hours felt like a full day.

Rossio, Chiado, Alfama, the cathedral and a wine tasting in three hours is a lot to fit in. It worked, but we were moving briskly. Our guide was excellent and read that we wanted depth rather than a checklist, and adjusted.
Having a separate guide and chauffeur made all the difference. The guide stayed with us on foot through Chiado and Alfama while the car repositioned. Ended at Praça do Comércio, which is the right place to finish.
